This conference examined the future of expansion of UK airport capacity in the South-East - bringing out latest thinking on the practicalities and impact of Heathrow expansion, and looked more widely at next steps for the Aviation Strategy.
Heathrow expansion was central to the morning’s discussion, including issues around connectivity to public transport, road congestion, air quality and the wider environmental impact of expansion, as well as the relationship between airports and local communities.
The agenda also looked at the Government’s proposed aviation strategy, with a white paper and further consultation expected later this year.
Stakeholders and policymakers discussed how the UK can develop its aviation industry in line with both the targets set out in the Clean Growth Strategy and the economic demands for increased airport capacity - looking at key issues for planning, air quality and community engagement, and options for further airport expansion in the region.
Further sessions considered possible alternatives for expanding airport capacity across the South-East, following legal challenges to the third runway, including expansion at Gatwick and decreasing spare capacity at Stansted.
