This seminar looked at priorities for and barriers to expanding Transnational Education, as the UK higher education sector assesses the challenges and opportunities presented by Brexit. Sessions focused on the key market opportunities for TNE provision - including partnership agreements and branch campuses - and the legal, logistical and quality assurance challenges for expansion.

The agenda also included discussion on latest trends in TNE provision and the opportunities for growth, along with identifying key geographical and subject areas for development and strategic opportunities for TNE to boost overall student numbers at a time of declining domestic and international student applications. Further sessions focused on assessing the potential for branch campuses in EU nations in order to maintain access to EU research funds and Erasmus+.

Delegates discussed the challenges of opening and operating branch campuses, meeting of UK and local quality assurance measures, potential impact of reformed immigration policies, role of technology in aiding development and considering the impact of branch campuses on their local environments. It was also an opportunity for discussion on Government and sector priorities for TNE, with keynote addresses from Aisling Conboy, Higher Education Specialist, Department for International Trade and Raegan Hiles, Head of TNE, Universities UK International.

Attendees included members of both Houses of Parliament, senior government officials involved in this area of public policy, together with university vice-chancellors and pro-vice-chancellors, staff from international branch campuses, international departmental deans and other staff involved in internationalisation at universities.
