This timely seminar assessed key issues for the higher education sector in London and options for supporting its position in the UK and internationally.
It took place with the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) year 2 results showing bronze being achieved by 34% of higher education institutions in London - half the national total for the lowest TEF rating.
Delegates assessed implications for the HE sector in London, including for its reputation and for staff and student recruitment - as well as underlying factors such as cost and housing issues, together with the overall relevance of the TEF to the situation in London and steps that could be taken to improve both quality and the TEF rating.
Those attending also discussed the developing competitive landscape in the London HE market following the passing of the Higher Education and Research Act, with a growing number of UK-based institutions opening branch campuses in London, several London based institutions considering opening EU-based branch campuses, and the removal of a cap on student numbers.
Further sessions considered the impact of Brexit on HE in London, including future access to research funding - and options for improving the marketing of London as an attractive destination for learning, teaching and research, with latest UCAS applicant data showing a 5% decline in applicants from the EU and a 2% rise in non-EU applicants to UK universities.
