Priorities for implementing the NHS Long Term Plan

This conference was a timely opportunity to assess the way forward for putting the NHS Long Term Plan into practice - looking at funding, integration and next steps for delivery.

It was an opportunity to discuss the publication of the NHS Long Term Plan, which committed to rolling out Integrated Care Systems across the country by 2021.

Those attending assessed the next steps for implementation ahead of the publication of local plans and the announcement of a new five-year GP contract, which included measures aimed at supporting the delivery of the Long Term Plan by establishing primary care networks across the country by July.

Delegates considered what additional arrangements might need to be put in place, and the roles of different stakeholder groups, in delivering the key aims for digital, efficiency and productivity, engagement, prevention, personalised care, and targets for clinical priorities such as cancer and mental health - as well as what further steps might be necessary to help transform health and social care over the next decade.

Further sessions considered what more could be done to integrate health and social care, following the publication of the Public Accounts Committee report on the interface between health and social care, which called for a separate plan for social care as a counterpart to the long term plan for the NHS.
