Delegates at this seminar discussed the impact of the £15 billion Government 'Road investment strategy', including 400 miles of extra capacity on the network through the creation of ‘smart motorways' enhancing connections between Birmingham, Manchester, Yorkshire and London, and designating A roads as expressways with improvements to traffic flow.
The agenda also looked at priorities for road users, and investment on a regional as well as national level, including discussion of maintenance of local roads following the announcement that 28 councils have been awarded £275m for local road maintenance from the Challenge Fund, in March 2015.
With the creation of Highways England, with new structures and responsibilities, further sessions discussed the Office of Rail and Road’s new monitoring role of the network and the formation of Transport Focus, representing road users.
