This conference assessed the key issues relating to the development of shale gas in the UK - including latest findings on impact, developments in regulation, and issues around community engagement and the future of the sector.
With the independent Task Force on Shale Gas due to release their report into the environmental impact of shale, its chair, Lord Chris Smith, delivered a keynote address at this event. Delegates also discussed recommendations already put forward by the Task Force for the creation of a new onshore underground energy regulator to simplify shale regulation and on increasing public confidence in onshore developments.
The agenda brought out further the key issues related to the selection of sites for onshore development, including how the level of community engagement and public consultation can be improved, assessments of the regulatory processes, and latest thinking on minimising impact of shale extraction on environment and communities, as well as its contribution to UK energy security. Further sessions looked at opportunities for license holders, developers and others in the supply chain to work together and move the industry forwards from exploratory to production phases of shale extraction.
