Bringing together policymakers and key stakeholders from across the sports sector with investors, sponsors and media businesses, this seminar provided an opportunity to examine the priorities for women's sport in the UK.
It took place in light of the interim report by the DCMS's Women and Sport Advisory Board on the progress made in their five priority areas for action, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee's first report on the barriers to women participating in sport, and the adoption of gender equality in the EU work plan for sport 2014-2017.
Delegates assessed the priorities for continuing to address the gender gap in school sports participation - including financing, content and delivery - and considered the role external organisations such as National Governing Bodies and professional clubs can play in supporting girls' sporting development. Delegates also considered examples of best practice in increasing female NGB board representation and the impact of identified unequal representation on elite performance and grass-roots participation - as well as the future implications of funding decisions based on equality and diversity to achieve at least 25% female Board representation by 2017.
Those attending also considered next steps for increasing broadcasting coverage of women's sport, and discussed the emerging investment and sponsorship opportunities in this area - as well as the implications for female grass-roots participation of the continued dominance of the reporting of men's sport.
