As schools prepared to teach the first set of qualifications from September 2015, this seminar examined the newly reformed GCSEs.
Following Ofqual's finalisation of the qualifications' grade boundaries, delegates at this seminar discussed the subject content of the revised GCSEs, as well as the potential impact of the reforms on classroom teaching, teacher training and the implications of the limited timeframe before the introduction of the new qualifications. Sessions also examined whether these qualifications will fulfill the Government's aim of making GCSEs more rigorous and how well they will fit in with the new National Curriculum.
Further areas discussed included the announced changes to how GCSEs will be structured for the new qualifications, including the implementation of a numerical '1-9' grading system, as well as the role of practical experiments in selected subjects. This conference also looked at whether GCSEs in their new form will sufficiently prepare students for further education and employment, and considered the future for the GCSE in light of Government's proposed raising of the participation age to 18 from 2015.
