With the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) report on the carbohydrates public consultation process closed, and the submitted evidence up for examination, this seminar provided an opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities for tackling obesity, and the key issues surrounding sugar consumption.
Delegates discussed the impact of Public Health England’s proposals to widen restrictions on food advertising and to launch targeted sugar consumption campaigns; latest thinking on developing a sugar tax; and challenges for ensuring that the obesity debate does not over-centralise around sugar.
Further sessions focused on the future of voluntary agreements in improving health and wellbeing, the impact of NICE guidelines advising the public to 'lose a little and keep it off', and priorities for professionals in public health and primary care in improving outcomes in obesity and encouraging healthier lifestyles.
