This seminar focused on next steps for music education policy in England. Delegates discussed what further steps are required to improve the standards and quality of music education after the introduction of music hubs - designed to bring together local authority provision, schools and private providers - that followed the National Plan for Music Education in 2011. The conference also took place in the context of the 2013 Ofsted report Music in schools: what hubs must do, which highlighted a 'lack of depth and rigour' to current provision.
Delegates considered any changes that might be needed to the structure of music hubs, and how future decisions about the funding of music provision post-2015 should be decided. They also discussed the standards of music teaching in hubs and in schools, the content of the new Music National Curriculum and steps that can be taken to support career progression for young musicians.
Attendees included key policymakers and regulatory officials as well as school and college leaders, universities and specialist Higher Education providers, local authorities, national music organisations and representatives from the music industry, awarding bodies as well as representatives of music hubs and of the interests of students themselves, as well as academics and others with an interest in this area.
