This seminar focused on progress and priorities for improving nutrition in care homes and hospitals. It provided an early opportunity to discuss the effectiveness of the new mandatory hospital food standards in tackling malnutrition in patients, including malnutrition screening and personalised nutrition plans. Discussion focused on the recommendations made in the Hospital Food Standards Panel's report to government. The chair of the Panel, Dianne Jeffery, was a keynote speaker at the seminar.
Delegates assessed the potential impact of changes to the Care Quality Commission's inspection model and implementation of Patient Led Assessment of the Care Environment, as well as wider challenges for regulation and standards for nutrition in care homes and hospitals.
Sessions looked at challenges for meeting the specific nutritional needs of the most vulnerable patients, and the role of nurses and other staff in the delivery of healthy hospital meals, examples of best practice in providing nutritional support for patients with long-term conditions and the impact of Defra's British Food Plan on buying and catering standards within hospitals and other care settings.
