Following the Government's plan to extend funding for the Teaching Leaders programme and creation of a Teaching Leaders Primary scheme, this seminar focused on the recruitment, training and development of the next generation of middle and senior leaders in England's schools. It was timed to coincide with the Government review into headteacher standards, published at the beginning of 2015.
Delegates discussed the means by which headteachers' performance should be judged in anticipation of the forthcoming standards and their likely impact on the professional development of school leaders and on improving school performance.
Further sessions addressed policy options to improve the identification and development of talented leaders within education, and the potential for bringing in management expertise from other sectors, as well as steps that could be taken to improve the attractiveness of senior positions.
Discussion was also informed by the School Teachers' Review Body report into leadership pay, and how more headteachers could be encouraged to take a system-wide role.
