This seminar brought together policymakers with senior stakeholders from across the sector, it focused on some of the key issues affecting the gambling industry, its customers and the communities in which it operates. It was scheduled at a time of significant developments in UK legislation affecting licensing and advertising, and as the sector looked toward new markets and distribution channels, including the continued rise of mobile.
Delegates discussed the implications of major legislation awaiting Royal Assent in the UK with a focus on how businesses in the gambling industry were set to adapt and continue to grow in the evolving commercial and regulatory environment with proposed tax increase affecting remote gambling; the introduction of a point-of-consumption licensing regime across Europe; and concerns about protection of potentially vulnerable groups including the impact of fixed odds betting machines and the wider presence of gambling on the high street. Issues of regulatory harmonisation within the EU and new guidance expected from the Committee of Advertising Practice on the promotion of free bets and bonus offers were also considered.
The agenda also looked at latest trends in the competitive environment with growth in mobile and the widening of markets.
