This seminar examined policy and strategic priorities for sport in the UK - from grassroots participation through to high performance.
It took place ahead of the Government's 2014-15 triennial review of UK Sport and Sport England and in the context of recommendations in the Lords Select Committee on Olympic and Paralympic Legacy report Keeping the flame alive: the Olympic and Paralympic Legacy on how Government, and professional sport and other stakeholders, can create synergies to deliver collaborative investment programmes and participation initiatives to benefit from the Olympic legacy in Britain.
Sessions assessed best practice in converting rising grassroots participation rates into competitive success at elite level - particularly ensuring the provision of high-quality facilities and the sustained involvement of young women. Delegates also considered emerging options to increase revenue streams from areas including sponsorship and local partnerships against the backdrop of cuts to local authority funding for community sports and UK Sport's 'No Compromise' funding policy for elite sport.
The conference brought together government representatives with national sport bodies and sports governing bodies; local councils, grass-roots programmes, schools and charities; corporate sponsors, investors and sports marketing professionals; academics, analysts and commentators; as well as legal specialists and other interested parties.
