This seminar provided a timely opportunity to discuss the next steps for food labelling policy in the UK. With EU food information regulation due to apply from December 2014, delegates discussed the challenges for its implementation, with particular attention to nutrition information on processed foods, origin labelling, allergen labelling and legibility.
The agenda also brought out the latest thinking on how food labelling can help improve public health, which provided delegates with an opportunity to assess how successful front-of-pack nutritional labelling has been in helping consumers choose healthier options and encouraging industry to provide healthier choices - one year on from its introduction. Sessions brought together key policymakers from Parliament and Whitehall with stakeholders with an interest in this area - including public health professionals, representatives of the food and drink industry, including manufacturers, retailers, and suppliers, local government officials, representatives of the labelling and packaging industries, academia, charities and consumer groups.
