This timely seminar focused on reforms to maths education at GCSE and A-level.
Delegates discussed the content of the new GCSE in maths to be taught from September 2015, and new A-level maths qualifications to be taught from September 2016. They also considered the content and implementation of the planned 'core maths' qualifications for students not studying maths at Level 3.
Sessions focused on implementation issues around the new qualifications, including the impact of removing modules and retaining tiering, and the requirement for students who fail to achieve a C at GCSE maths to study the subject until 18, as well as the impact of the newly created maths hubs on the quality of teaching.
Further topics for discussion included how well the new maths qualifications will prepare students with the knowledge and skills required for Higher Education and employment, as well as whether they will ensure students leave Key Stage 5 with 'functional' maths skills for daily life.
