At a time of considerable change to the recruitment and training of teachers, this seminar focused on key issues around teacher training, supply, and professional development.
Delegates discussed the impact of School Direct as it came to the end of its second year and its implications for other routes into teaching. As individual schools took on greater responsibility for training and recruitment of their own workforce, challenges around planning numbers and allocation of training places nationally were also considered.
Sessions also focused on the recruitment of trainee teachers, particularly in priority subjects, the impact of stricter entry requirements to the profession, and the success of initiatives to attract and retain high-performing graduates. Delegates also discussed the role of teaching schools in training new teachers and supporting existing teachers with their professional development.
