This seminar provided a timely opportunity to consider key issues around sport in England's schools, including the new PE Curriculum and the impact of the youth sport strategy on securing an Olympic legacy. It came after Government's announcement of £150m per annum of ring-fenced funding for primary sport, and followed the publication of the Education Select Committee's report, School sport following London 2012: No more political football, as well as Government's response.
Delegates discussed the content and implementation of the new Physical Education Programme of Study for Key Stages 1-4, and how schools can ensure the provision of a wide range of team and individual sports.
Further sessions examined efforts to widen participation in sport and exercise among pupils, and how talented pupils can best be identified and supported to fulfil their potential. The impact of new ring-fenced funding for specialist provision in primary schools was also discussed.
This seminar brought together key stakeholders - including school leaders, teacher training professionals, youth sport organisations, sport federations, representatives of local authorities and other interested parties - with senior policymakers and officials.
