Delegates at this seminar considered a range of policies affecting sustainability in Wales. It was held during the Commissioner for Sustainable Futures’ National Conversation - a public engagement exercise between February and April 2014 - and was scheduled to precede the introduction of the Future Generations Bill to the National Assembly for Wales as well as following the Welsh Government’s consultation on the Environment (Wales) Bill - designed to provide a more integrated management of the environment in Wales.
The conference brought together policymakers in the Welsh Government and more widely with stakeholders including businesses from sectors affected by the issues, energy and environmental groups, academics, local government and other interested parties. Delegates discussed the content and impact of both Bills as well as the ongoing development of the Sustainable Development Charter. The proposed new duties for public bodies regarding sustainability and the establishment of an independent sustainability body for Wales were also discussed, as was the progress towards the Welsh Government's target of achieving zero waste for Wales by 2050.
