With a new set of policies to support television production in the UK outlined by the Government, this conference examined what it means for the sector - as well as the emerging opportunities and challenges more widely. It took place in the context of the DCMS's policy paper Connectivity, Content and Consumers: Britain's digital platform for growth - detailing the Government's strategy to improve the competitiveness of the UK television in the global market - and reflects the issues covered by the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee inquiry Support for the Creative Industries, reviewing evidence taken from major UK broadcasters on the structure of the sector, investment in original content and options to ensure British independent producers remain competitive.
Delegates at this seminar considered the emerging strategies to market UK television internationally and compete with European and US imports, the next steps for developing and protecting the UK's first-class facilities and specialist skills, the funding challenges facing the independent production sector - including the impact of the new tax credits for high-end drama - and the implications of co-productions for programme-makers' capacity to invest in the future. This event formed part of a series of seminars which examined the public policy and commercial challenges facing different sectors of the UK's creative economy.
