This seminar presented a timely opportunity to discuss the future direction of fishing policy in the UK, following agreement between the Council of Ministers and European Parliament on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Sessions focused on the challenges for implementing the CFP in the UK, with particular attention to the introduction of a phased ban on discards from 2015, restoring stocks to Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) by 2020 and the establishment of a more regional management system.
Delegates discussed the latest on consumer attitudes to fish, the challenges for promoting growth and sustainability in the UK fishing industry and the impact of Government's proposed extension of Marine Conservation Zones on the sector.
