This seminar was a timely opportunity to examine policy initiatives for ensuring fair access to England's universities and improving student success - including new approaches to achieving greater participation from disadvantaged groups, as well as improving student retention and outcomes. It was timed to follow the release of the national strategy for access and student success in Autumn 2013, and one year on from the release of Alan Milburn's independent review University Challenge: How Higher Education Can Advance Social Mobility.
The conference brought together key policymakers with stakeholders - including schools, colleges, universities, social action groups and regulators. Planned sessions focused on the role of the national access strategy in increasing access to higher education and encouraging student success in universities, the likely challenges for the implementation of the strategy and best practice on widening participation spending, including the impact of fee waivers, community outreach, bursaries and scholarship.
