This seminar provided an opportunity to assess the next steps for charity law, future for the role of the charity sector and was scheduled to take place after the Government's full response to Lord Hodgson's Review of the Charities Act and as the Law Commission begins its review of Charity Law. It also followed the Public Administration Select Committee's report on The role of the Charity Commission and "public benefit" which recommended limiting the Charity Commission's activities and redefining the criteria for charitable status.
Delegates at this seminar examined how Lord Hodgson's recommendations should be implemented in areas such as deregulation and improving transparency. Topics for discussion also included how charities should attract appropriate trustees, as well as proposed changes to the functions of regulatory bodies and the governance of face to face fundraising.
Further sessions brought out latest thinking on the independence of the sector, the provision of public services by charities and financial strategies for charities to maintain both their independence and public trust.
