This seminar presented an opportunity to discuss key issues around school exclusions and alternative provision (AP) as the school-commissioned AP trial continued into its second year. It followed the publication of the Office of the Children's Commissioner's reports on inequalities in exclusions, They Go The Extra Mile, and 'illegal exclusions', Always Someone Else's Problem, and included a keynote address from Dr Maggie Atkinson, Children's Commissioner for England.
Discussion focused on the implementation of the Taylor Review recommendations including allowing teacher training to take place in Pupil Referral Units and AP Academies, and the impact of the first five AP Free Schools in providing quality alternative education. Challenges around AP in the context of raising the participation age for education and training were also discussed, as were steps to improve assessment and accountability of provision, availability of qualifications for children in AP, and how to ensure appropriate AP for all children, including those with special educational or emotional needs.
