Delegates at this conference discussed the next steps for innovation in medicines, technology and services for healthcare, and the impact on outcomes, efficiency and patient experience.
With the Medical Innovation Bill - which aims to encourage responsible scientific experimentation in medicine - in Parliament, and with the Secretary of State announcing the investment by government and NHS organisations of £1 billion in IT over the next three years, debate focused upon how the obstacles to developing new healthcare technologies and medicines can be overcome, the ways in which regulatory bodies can facilitate and encourage the advancement of innovation, and how dissemination and adoption of best practice can be encouraged throughout the health service.
Further sessions examined the challenges faced by NHS England, Clinical Commissioning Groups and Academic Health and Science Networks as they promote research and innovation in healthcare, and considered the ways in which they can work best with providers to increasingly improve patient care, decrease mortality rates and contribute to a reduction in NHS expenditure, following the cancellation of the specialised services commissioning innovation fund.
