This conference focused on the priorities and next steps for spectrum management in the UK, following the 4G auction, completion of digital switchover (a year ahead of schedule), and with broadcasters lobbying ahead of plans designed to clear the 700MHz band. With Ofcom outlining strategies to ensure the future availability and with the DCMS strategy document: Connectivity, Content and Consumers - Britain's Digital Platform for growth announcing a 10 year plan to increase public value from the UK's electromagnetic spectrum, the seminar offered an opportunity for delegates to consider the latest announcements and options to incentivise licensees to 'use it or lose it' - with Ofcom revising mobile operators' licence fees for 900 and 1800MHz and a 'spectrum tax' for broadcasters set for implementation. Delegates also assessed the ways to ensure capacity for emerging demands including mobile data and the long vaunted 'internet of things'.
