This seminar was timed to assess the introduction of consistent front-of-pack food labelling in the summer of 2013 and Government's consultation response on its plans to enforce Food Information to Consumers (FIC) in the UK in 2014.
Delegates considered the potential public health impact of front-of-pack nutritional labelling on informing consumer choices and incentivising the food industry to provide healthier options, as well as discussing the challenges for industry of plans to implement FIC in the UK - with particular attention to country of origin labelling, the clarity of food labels, the labelling of nanomaterial ingredients and the labelling of vegetable oil.
In light of the Food Standards Agency's survey on the presence of horse and pig DNA in beef products, this seminar also provided an opportunity to assess the state of consumer confidence in food labelling, what consumers want from food labelling and how this should be reflected by Government policy and industry practice.
