This seminar was an opportunity to discuss the priorities for infrastructure investment in Wales. It followed the release in June of the 2013 Annual Update of the Wales Infrastructure Investment Plan for Growth and Jobs; which included information on new finance schemes, proposals to improve public service efficiency and the announcement in the 2014-2020 European Structural Fund Programmes of infrastructure as a priority. It also followed additional capital spending for infrastructure announced by the UK Government in March 2013.
This conference brought together senior policymakers - including the Minster for Finance and Secretary of State for Wales - with key stakeholders including businesses, construction companies, telecommunications companies, representatives of the financial services sector, trade unions, local authorities, transport companies and lawyers.
Delegates examined both planned and potential new infrastructure projects in transport, including rail, roads and the future for Cardiff airport as well as for super-fast broadband and renewable energy. The role of infrastructure development in wider economic policies such as Enterprise Zones; Local Growth Zones and the implementation of the 2012 Haywood Report on City Regions were also discussed as well as steps that could be taken to increase inward investment for Welsh infrastructure projects.
