Future of UK fishing: reforming the Common Fisheries Policy, marine environment policy and towards a more sustainable fishing industry

October 2012

Starting from: £99 + VAT
Format: DOWNLOADABLE PDF

With the European Commission in the process of reforming the controversial Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), this seminar proved a timely opportunity to examine the next steps for fisheries policy and increasing the sustainability of the UK's fishing industry. With the reform due to enter into force in 2013, delegates discussed how regional management plans should be put into practice, and assessed how regionalised management will work alongside the need to co-operate with other member states on fishing policy.
In light of the Commission's proposal that fisheries management should be based on Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY), sessions brought out the latest thinking on how MSY should be defined, as well as how the transition to fishing at MSY is likely to affect the shape of the fishing industry in the UK. The agenda also included an update on policy on discards, as well as on consumer attitudes to sustainable fishing.
