This Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum seminar on obesity took place eighteen months on from the Call to action on obesity and with Health and Wellbeing Boards moving towards full operation.
The 2013 annual seminar focused on early indications following the Call to action, including on progress towards meeting the new 'national ambitions' of reducing the national calorie intake by 5 billion calories a day and working towards a downward trend in excess weight in children and adults by 2020. Discussion brought out the latest thinking on how the Responsibility Deal on food and physical activity is progressing, and assessed the impact of Government's plan to introduce a consistent system of front-of-pack food labelling this year.
Delegates also examined the main challenges facing the delivery of obesity interventions in the new commissioning landscape, looking at the evidence base for different interventions and considering which methods are most cost-effective. With the Government recommending a life-course approach to tackling obesity, discussion also highlighted how weight management programmes are working for people of all ages, and assessed where best to focus attention in order to achieve maximum results.
