This seminar brought out latest thinking on the social and economic value of IP (intellectual property). Discussions focused on how a comprehensive strategy for IP could underpin the UK's position as a competitive leader in the global economy.
This emerged as a major policy focus for the new Parliament, with research being undertaken by the Intellectual Property Office and the Council for Science and Technology, which highlighted the increasing emphasis placed on the role of government and business to stimulate innovation and generate growth.
Sessions considered latest thinking on what more could be done to support knowledge-intensive industries - including pharmaceuticals, green technologies and the creative industries - and how Intellectual Property Rights could be used to encourage innovation and harness technological advances. Discussions also addressed the additional benefits an increased emphasis on research and development could bring and the important role of IP in wider society.
