This seminar focused on two key strands of the Home Office White Paper Protecting the public, supporting the police to succeed - improving the level of trust between the police and the public and reinforcing police accountability. Sessions focused on the public perception of crime and the next steps for community policing, including Community Contracts, which will set out what residents can expect from the police and local authorities regarding crime and anti-social behaviour. The seminar also examined whether accountability can be improved at police force level by strengthening the code of conduct for police officers, and requiring senior police authorities to hold regular meetings with the public.
