This conference provided a timely opportunity to consider the future for the UK’s patent framework.
It was scheduled to bring out discussion on the long-term impact of the EU referendum on UK patent law - most notably in relation to the UK’s future involvement and interaction with the Unified Patent system and Unified Patent Court (UPC).
Delegates discussed key challenges and opportunities for UK patent policy post-Brexit, looking at next steps for developing the UK’s future attractiveness as a jurisdiction for cross-border disputes; options ahead for rights holders in seeking pan-European and international patent protection; as well as the future impact of the European Patent Convention on UK litigation, including the governance of standard essential patents.
Following the publication of the Intellectual Property Office’s (IPO) five year strategy - which sets out plans to promote UK creativity and innovation - further sessions looked at next steps for generating UK economic growth through IP policy, including initiatives to encourage businesses to better understand and protect their IP. Delegates also focused on Government’s Intellectual Property (Unjustified Threats) Bill and its possible impact on business competition, dispute resolution and litigation, and ensuring consistent enforcement processes.
