Timed to discuss the Government’s consultation into developing a smart energy system, this seminar assessed the next steps and policy priorities for making the ‘smart grid’ a reality.
Delegates evaluated the options for establishing a flexible and low-carbon electricity network, including an assessment of how new system measures such as demand-side response and automated processes should be integrated into standard network operations, as well as the role of increased energy storage capacity in managing demand.
Following the publication of the Future Power System Architecture (FPSA) project report undertaken jointly by the IET and Energy Systems Catapult that assessed the drivers for transformational change of the UK electricity network to meet key challenges for the future, and in light of the launch of FPSA2 that is the second phase of this work, sessions at this seminar evaluated the ‘Whole-Systems’ management of the UK’s energy network and the practical and regulatory challenges moving forwards.
Further discussion assessed priorities for research and innovation, the development of links between industry and academia in this subject, as well as future opportunities for SMEs to participate in a competitive market.
