With mandatory food standards being included in the NHS Standard Contract for the first time and hospitals now rated for food quality on NHS choices, this seminar was a timely opportunity to discuss the progress and next steps for improving quality and nutritional standards of food being served by the NHS.
Discussion also focused on best practice for raising awareness of the importance of good nutritional care within hospitals and the social care sector - in light of NHS England’s new guidance for commissioners to improve the nutritional and hydration care in acute services to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the risk of malnourishment in the community. Delegates also considered latest thinking on the challenges of sourcing more nutritious hospital food in a sustainable way and policy priorities for promoting healthy diets to staff and visitors, in the context of the NHS plan to introduce a 20% sugar tax on all food and drink sold in hospitals. Further sessions looked at new approaches for delivering good nutritional care to the most vulnerable patients, particularly the elderly.
