Timed as new suppliers began to enter the market for supplying water to businesses ahead of the introduction of competition in April 2017, this seminar discussed the outlook for water supply and competition in England.
It was an opportunity to discuss supply resilience, and key issues around the industry’s relationships with customers, following the publication in May of Ofwat’s consultation on its Water 2020 programme, as well as the outlook for other areas of the water sector, such as the upstream and wastewater segments.
Drawing on lessons from a similar competition programme introduced in Scotland from 2008, discussion was on challenges for current water suppliers, opportunities to effectively engage with consumers and developing a regulatory structure that encourages innovation. Further sessions examined investment priorities and responding to challenges for network resilience and natural capital ahead of the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment in January 2017, and the future potential for competition in the household water sector.
