In the wake of the referendum result on the UK's membership of the European Union, and concerns over the future delivery of new nuclear power stations in the UK, this seminar assessed the policy landscape for nuclear energy moving forwards.
It followed the ‘policy reset’ speech delivered by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change citing nuclear as “central to our energy secure future” along with gas power, and the subsequent announcement of £250 million investment in an “ambitious” nuclear research and development programme to boost UK industry expertise - including the UK’s role in developing new technologies as part of a new competition to identify the best value small modular reactor design for the UK.
Sessions brought out latest thinking on developing the advanced manufacturing supply chain and priorities for developing sector skills and growing the workforce for the sector moving forward, in addition to the regulatory framework and timescale for the development of new projects, as well as what more the UK needs to do in order to achieve its decommissioning obligations.
