As the Government revisited its Electricity Market Reform programme, this conference examined progress of reform, as well as market dynamics and the future for policy.
It was timed to consider issues around resumption of the Contracts for Difference scheme at the end of 2016, and followed the latest round of expanded Capacity Market auctions, which included interconnectors for the first time. Delegates also assessed the developing role of the Low Carbon Contracts Company in the Contracts for Difference and Capacity Market schemes and the next steps for EMR implementation following Ofgem's delivery assessment, which was published in June 2016.
Further sessions assessed the future of low carbon electricity generation following the early closure of the Renewables Obligation subsidy for onshore wind and solar energy in April, as well as the opportunities for demand-side energy management and new options for supporting SMEs applying to participate in the market. They also considered the future outlook for energy integration with Europe, following the recent vote for the UK to leave the EU and as cross-border energy suppliers begin to enter the Capacity Market auctions.
