Bringing together key stakeholders and policy makers from across the education sector, this seminar looked at preparations for teaching the new GCSE and A-level Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) subjects from September 2016.
It was also an opportunity to consider the findings of the annual Language Trends survey carried out by the CfBT Education Trust and British Council.
Delegates assessed the impact of compulsory status for languages in Key Stage 2, introduced in September 2014, and steps to support effective transitions into secondary school. They also discussed measures to improve take-up of languages subjects, particularly at A-level, in light of concerns that performance measures, grading and assessment systems have had a negative impact on participation in language study.
Further sessions looked at pressures on staffing, steps to improve the accreditation and status of languages spoken in the home, the value of languages for employers and businesses, and measures to improve the confidence, skills and training of languages teachers. In addition there was also discussion on how the EBacc performance measure will affect schools.
