Following the announcement of an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority into the supply and acquisition of energy in the UK, and timed as it prepared to publish its provisional decision in January, this seminar discussed the future of the energy market in the UK. On the day following a major policy speech from the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, delegates also considered the impact of top-level policy priorities on the market, as well as findings recently released by the CMA that highlighted problems in the current energy market and a need to increase consumer engagement and supplier flexibility.
Sessions focused on key issues in relation to regulation, the balance of subsidies across energy generation in the UK, developing competition across the sector, and encouraging opportunities for consumer switching. As suppliers prepare to roll out smart electricity and gas meters to all households by the end of 2020, there was also analysis of the practicality of more flexible tariff structures and the impact smart technology will have on households.
